Key Concept: cultural hub beneath the main square, accessible by archaic street
The square features historical monuments from the 13th-century Great Mongol Empire and the People’s Revolution. The proposed plan aims to extend this historical space to the surrounding area. Visitors can explore Ulaanbaatar’s development history and enjoy modern cultural facilities.
Main Circulation
The plan will create a primary corridor through Sukhbaatar Square and the Government Palace, directing traffic through the designed area. Along this corridor, a panorama depicting the history of Ulaanbaatar’s development will be displayed.
Creating a Living Space
To encourage pedestrian movement, the roads on the east and west sides of the square will be closed during weekends or periods of low traffic. This follows examples from other cities where central squares are surrounded by pedestrian paths, creating lively, human-friendly spaces.
Becoming a Cultural Center
To make Ulaanbaatar’s history and development more accessible to both tourists and the public, there is a proposal to establish a Ulaanbaatar City Museum in the central square.
